When Going Live Feels Like Walking on Eggs 🥚

Why I’m rethinking where I stream — from TikTok to Whatnot
Lately, it feels like you have to tiptoe around every single word when you go live on TikTok. One small phrase or moment can trigger a violation — and I’ve learned that the hard way.
I’ve gotten multiple violations for “redirecting traffic” even when I wasn’t saying anything close to that. I wasn’t telling people to go elsewhere or pushing another platform — I was just doing what every live seller does: chatting with my community, answering questions, and showing products.
The Appeal Process That Went Nowhere 😔
Each time, I filed an appeal… and each time, it wasn’t approved. No real explanation, no chance to clarify, and no visibility into what specifically crossed a line. As a small business and live creator, every stream matters. The time, energy, and effort that go into setting up a show — only for it to be cut short by an unfair violation — is exhausting.
Why I’m Considering Whatnot 💛
It’s making me rethink where I want to build my community long-term. Platforms like Whatnot make it easier to sell, have fun, and connect without feeling like you’re under constant surveillance. The rules are clearer, the environment feels more creator-friendly, and you can focus on what you love: bringing joy and excitement through mystery boxes, blind bags, and unboxings.
TL;DR: I still value the reach on TikTok, but Whatnot currently feels like the safer, more predictable place to host live shopping.
Protecting Your Peace (and Your Business) ✨
Being a creator means protecting your time, energy, and audience experience. Sometimes that means finding the platforms that actually want to see you succeed — and give you clear guardrails so you can do your best work.
Quick Notes for Fellow Live Sellers
- Keep on-screen text and verbal callouts ultra clear; avoid phrases that could be misread as sending viewers off-platform.
- Use platform-native features (pinned products, in-app links) so your intent is obvious.
- If you’re appealing a violation, screenshot everything and explain context in one concise paragraph.
- Have a backup platform plan (like Whatnot) so a surprise flag doesn’t end your night.
